AI portrait camera angles and framing: three prompt pairs

By Luma Atelier editorial team ยท Published

You asked for a close portrait and the whole outfit. Which request should the image follow?

On this pageDo you need her expression or her hands?

Do you need her expression or her hands?

Keep the camera at eye level for both versions. The wider version also adds a hand-held paint sample so you can see why the hands matter. Choose the composition for the job you want the picture to do.

Choose two things separately: where the camera sits, and how much of the person appears in the frame. Camera height places the viewpoint above, below or level with the eyes. Shot size sets the visible crop.

Nell, our original fictional bicycle frame painter, is 35. She has short auburn curls and wears a navy overshirt over a mustard T-shirt, dark trousers and brown boots. Each pair keeps her relaxed expression and soft window light. These AI-assisted prompts are authored examples. We have not generated or benchmarked their results.

A: Nell, an original adult character aged 35, with short auburn curls, navy overshirt and mustard T-shirt. Close portrait including her face and shoulders, camera at eye level. Relaxed expression, soft window light, gray workshop wall behind her. Naturalistic photograph.

B: Nell, an original adult character aged 35, with short auburn curls, navy overshirt and mustard T-shirt. Waist-up portrait including both hands holding a bicycle paint sample, camera at eye level. Relaxed expression, soft window light, gray workshop wall behind her. Naturalistic photograph.

Choose A when the expression is the subject. Choose B when you want the sample and her hands to help explain the scene. If B leaves the hands outside the frame, clarify "include both hands fully above the lower edge." Adding "close-up" would pull the request in the opposite direction.

After reviewing B, you might decide the face is too small for a profile image. That is a reason to return to A and let the paint sample appear in another picture.

How much of the workbench should we see?

This pair keeps the waist-up crop. Only the requested camera height changes.

B: Nell, an original adult aged 35, with short auburn curls, navy overshirt and mustard T-shirt. Waist-up at a workbench, holding a paint sample beside a closed tin. Camera slightly above her eye level, looking gently down. Relaxed expression, soft window light, gray wall. Naturalistic photograph.

Ask which view gives you a clearer account of the activity. Check the top of the tin and the sample. If a generated result shows less of her face than you want, ask her to look toward the camera while keeping its height unchanged, or choose a different composition.

"High angle" alone leaves the amount of elevation open. "Slightly above her eye level" expresses a smaller change than an overhead view.

Can the boots stay in a lower viewpoint?

Use a full figure when the clothing or stance matters. Keep space around the body in both prompts.

B: Nell, an original adult aged 35, short auburn curls, navy overshirt, mustard T-shirt, dark trousers and brown boots. Full figure in her workshop, both boots visible with floor beneath them. Camera below her eye level, looking slightly up, relaxed stance, soft window light. Naturalistic photograph.

Check the framing before interpreting the mood. Are the boots inside the image? Is the requested upward view visible? Does the face still suit your intended use?

A lower viewpoint can suit your composition without assigning Nell a new personality. Whether she seems imposing, amused or awkward also depends on expression, pose and the viewer. Treat that response as your reading of the image.

Resolve the request before paying for it

Replace a conflict such as "tight face portrait, entire outfit visible" with the view you need now. The character image prompt guide helps you keep appearance details while revising a shot.

Use the image workspace and its available settings. New generation uses credits; review current prices and the quote before submitting. A rewritten brief can still produce other changes, so inspect the result before ordering another revision.

The chat media guide explains where to find an image requested within a character conversation.
